The best thing you can do if you undertake any works is make sure he's aware he's paying you regardless and to document and photograph everything.

 

I deal with quite a few of these cases and as we have evidence of reasonable actions on our part as the tree owner with survey and work records etc many claims do fail as the failure was nor reasonably foreseeable.
