Generic short diagnoses: Annual, typically thick-fleshed and tough, but not woody,white rotting polypores with more or less vivid brown flesh, pore surface with a silvery reflex when fresh and often with prominent hymenial setae. On wood or rooting in soil.

Thanks Hama, it looks more like I. nodulosus than anything else I've looked at and it seems to fit the description. Unfortunately I only have the picture to go on - it was more of a day for trying to get to grips with apertures rather than ID's and I didn't bring back a sample.

I myself have no experience of this one, despite trying to seek it out, also inonotus radiatus, both these favouring alder, and now i have found two stands of alder close by i can stand a chance of getting them off my to capture list!
