Thanks Hama, it looks more like I. nodulosus than anything else I've looked at and it seems to fit the description. Unfortunately I only have the picture to go on - it was more of a day for trying to get to grips with apertures rather than ID's and I didn't bring back a sample.

I myself have no experience of this one, despite trying to seek it out, also inonotus radiatus, both these favouring alder, and now i have found two stands of alder close by i can stand a chance of getting them off my to capture list!
