Having done a good amount of time in some fairly empty parts of Aus and NZ, one phrase will never leave me...:

 

"If you want to go to the bush, take a Land Rover. If you want to come home, take a Toyota."

 

For the record, my money has been in both, but the Jap stuff brings home the bread up here.

Two months ago I bought a 10 plate supercab ranger. Really impressed great towing ability and is comfortable to drive. Worth looking at as a option even in double cab may be usefull for you. It returns about 33mpg every day driving less when towing but so far I am happy.

VW Touareg V10 TDI. I do quite a bit of towing and 309bhp and 553 lb ft and only 4mpg.

 

Fixed that for you :) V10 is a V10, single figures. Looked into them when I had a cheap source of bio diesel but VAG reused to warranty 100% bio.
