As I alluded to I think what you will find is the 042 and 048 model Stihls are more of a collectors item these days than a working type saw .In good tune they run just fine but because of a rather short production run they never gained in popularity which makes it not really lucrative to produce after market parts for them .

Conversely the 038 model in praticular the magnum version reached world wide acclaim and thus with the vast amount produced plus the following it gained this model is very luctrative to produce after market parts for .Purely a question of economics .

Well in that case, at least when mine finally gives up and have to throw it in the bin i'll be happy in the fact that i got the saw for free after it sitting in a shed unused for nearly 30 years.

It is a dinosaur but when it works good and comes for free its better than shelling out hundreds on a new saw.

Pic on 048 muffler thread.

Well quite honestly the only reason I don't run my two more often is the fact one needs a set of rings which are 038 Mag size,52 mm and the other has a leaky clutch side seal . I have parts to fix both .Just haven't taken the time to so

You just get caught up in things and rather than take time to fix the problem you make do .Just the other day finally after 13-14 years got around to changing an alternator on one of my tractors .

1951 Ferguson TO 20 which had been converted to 12 volts with a Chevy interagal alternator .I dug around my shop until I found one with the same mounting, had the thing finished in about two hours .Afterwards I thought to myself ,fought that rascal for all that time ,constantly having to use a battery charger to keep it going and fixed it that quickly .Geeze talk about dumb .
