'Temporary' Chopped Wood Storage?

My experience has been that cutting and splitting the wood to the size you're going to use in the fire, stacking on pallets then covering the top (just the top!) with tarps in the autumn seems to get the wood ready to burn quickest. I haven't had any trouble with mould or rot doing this. I've never tried putting pallets on top of the stack, no doubt this would help a bit with airflow but I don't think it's essential.

If you have a cord stack as well, yes, do tarp the top for the winter but don't expect a drying miracle...

If you leave it in the round, all you will have is wood that is the same moisture content, and species like Sycamore or birch will show extensive rot.

Get it split and off the ground, with a little bit of cover to keep the worst of the rain off.

Sent from my Galaxy arse using tupping talk.

Check ALL the simple things first.

I've looked at polytunnels and the real cheapo ones are less than £100 (and look quite flimsy) - but the field is on the road side in a sensitive Conservation area, so the Planners will be onto me in no time.

Some of the cordwood has already been down a year (oak & beech) and the chain saw seems to get through it Ok - I did all of the stuff in the photo before sharpening the chain (split with a maul).

Looks like pallets and tarp in the field and a bit of double handling to the log store.

Cheers - DEAN.
