I've ben volunteering with the BTCV(TCV now), National Trust and my local County Council. They all seemed pretty eager to get some free labour while I decided one way or another if it was for me. Normally It was a case of fill out a H&S Form (Next of kin details, alergies etc)and your good to go.

I'm still a beginer myself, doing an Environment Managment degree through the OU(best chance I had of getting into higher education as my academic finnesse is limited to say the least, as well as funding being an issue) and I've done/ doing Env Conservation & Arb Diplomas. A friend has also pointed at the local authority, but I'm still waiting to get in touch with them as summer is mostly grass cutting and shifting chavs with cheep cider from the parks.
