Same goes for stacking neatly for a forwarder - a bit of tapping the ends up is fine but if you;re stack look like the sticks have been thrown on then expect a bulling!

Beat me to it:biggrin:

Already a lot of good advice in this thread. Make sure you cut the rack first then fell into it as this will save you a lot of hassle. Remember prior planning and preparation prevents piss poor performance. If you can get a felling bench going all the better as that will speed things up a lot.

As has been said, first thinnings is hard graft, but if this is what you want to do, stick at it and you will naturally get quicker and find little ways of making the job easier. Sometimes pays to give a lad a few quid to stack logs for you (alot of school leavers this time of year). In the 'clark's' catalogue there is a tool called 'tree pusher jack', looks like a nifty bit of kit. might work for you!

The woods is a good place to start your career. Very little to damage and loads to learn. As said it's very hard graft to earn. Be careful with tiredness, especially towards the end of the day. It's easy to injure yourself on uneven ground or with the saw when fresh so monitor yourself constantly and stop when tired. Use a small saw. Practice accuracy with your felling so you don't wear yourself out with hang-ups.

Of course tired is a relative term and means different things to different folk. Most youngsters don't know the meaning of the word tired. But then that's probably cos I'm an old fooker.
