lombardini 2 cylinder problems

I have a lombardini air cooled 2 cylinder engine that powers my splitter (was used previously as donkey engine for Atlas Brick crane). Engine runs great for 1-2 hours then starts struggling and keeps nearly cutting out . If I take air filter of goes great again for another hour then gets bad again (air filter is one of those steel mesh ones with a tad of oil at bottom). Mechanic looking at it Sun but would like some ideas before hand to keep splitting.

I had the same problem with a Hatz, changed all the filters no change, then after much head scratching I found a fuel filter on the end of the pickup pipe inside the tank, chocked full of crap.

Try a direct fuel feed to the pump and rule out fuel starvation first.

Agree with above. Were you stopping the engine when removing the air cleaner? This would allow any gunk to settle again having been sucked on to the pick up strainer. Careful running without a filter tho as you could wreck the fuel pump. Tank might want a flush thus. Air in fuel system is another one - delayed reaction might be due to a seal loosening up after a thorough warming... Good luck.

Spot on Dean, there was a thimble sized filter blocked, cleaned everything out and runs like a dream now 7 hours a day :001_smile:

just seen this thread.

i had a deutz which had the same problem and followed all of the above but i also had to clean out the fuel pump.

there is a gauze in there which may also need a clean, mine was thick with black stuff

The 'black stuff' is an algae that grows in heavy oil when it has some residual moisture (humidity) in it - famed for blocking filters. Can't remember it's exact biological name but some additives claim to remove microbial growth from the fuel system.
