I'm also looking for a basic course which will outline the essential dos and don'ts for managing woodland in general. I didn't know the value of dead standing timber before reading it here. There must be loads more basic knowledge that would be valuable to know.

The basics of woodland management, well, any habitat management really, is to know what you've got BEFORE you do anything. This means survey, nothing too complicated or scientific at this stage, just to give you a good idea of the main species present. That's the trees and shrubs as well as mammals, fungi etc etc.

Be clear about your objectives.

And

do things slowly

Doing things slowly (a couple of trees at a time) gives mobile species a chance to move on also it reduces the amount of impact from invasive species such as bracken, brambles, knotweed etc.

I've seen and been involved in large clearances which have resulted in large areas of bracken. This then leads to lengthy periods of unnecessary management and expense.

Don't get hung-up on details and see if you can get some help locally.

Good luck with whatever you do.:thumbup1:

Has anyone done this course and passed, or anyone with any experience of it?

I am probably going to do it myself pretty soon but would be interested in others views, thanks

I'd never heard of it before, but I looked it up and it seems like it could be useful. However, what exactly do you want to gain from it? As a route into employment, it probably won't count for all that much. For personal development, helping you in the job you do, it could well be excellent. It looks like it's heavily geared around SPS and ES, so if these things aren't relevant to you, maybe looking at other courses would make more sense.

I am thinking that it would help with my business and help me secure more work with farmers in the future. Its a new course and I dont know anyone else that has done it yet, so could help me stand out from the crowd in that respect. BASIS courses are very well regarded in Agriculture.

I am getting more and more work regarding agri-environmental schemes and thought this course would help me communicate better with farmers and help with there applications etc.
