whtas the idea behind them, i've seen them in the shops but never seen anyone use them. how do they work.

 

I dont know the reason behind the design for sure, but I presume they are for strengthening/physio of muscle/tendons.

The best way to describe them is they are like a weight mounted on ball bearings inside a plastic ball, when you shake the ball in circular motions it gets the weight spinning inside and the more you do so it creates a G force much heavier than the ball. Quite clever really.
