good thinking robbo i did think about that, not to sure weather they're in the typical triangle christmas tree shape or not they're pretty close to each other

Close or not you'll still find they will be pyramidal in shape.

If they were planted to be christmas trees then wait till winter, depending on species and size. Norway spruce from 25' up to 50' are popular for town centres.

would all the gum of dried enough to burn cleanly,

would it not dry quicker if it was processed into logs then stored in my barn?

If you mean the resin you don't need to worry about it. There are myths on the go about it tarring up the flue or whatever, it's all rubbish.

Wood dries quickest if it has a good airflow. Stacked outside and covered with a tarp is about as quick as it gets.

Makes very good dry woodchip for biomass. Need to ring bark before sap rises and will be ready to harvest with whole tree chipper within 6 months. Care needed when the tree becomes tinder dry as a fire hazard.

My point re gum was in the cutting and snedding as it can be a sticky business. Once dried, the sap becomes rocket fuel. You'll get far less tarring from softwood than hardwood in my experience.
