question about log splitter

hi all,

i have a big beech tree to cross cut and split for fire wood. it's got lots of knots and i was just wondering how good these log splitters adverised on amazon are? are they more efficient than good, old axe? which ones are worth getting and which ones are not?

i saw some based on car jack- it doesn't seem to be very fast if each time i have to "pump it up" to get one split. what about electric ones? are they anywhere near as fast an powerful as tractor mounted?

thanks for help

I assume you mean the sort of Clarke / draper / einhell type machines? 2 kw / 4 ton or so. Or the bottle jack based ones.

Either will work ok but to be honest it's slow going compared to a maul. I have a little clarke logbuster 7 and it's a good machine but I only use it to take care of the knotty stuff.
