How do you get a new climber quicker without him losing his confidence/breaking anything?

Practice more, don't concentrate on speed, make sure your safe and get a system going. Speed comes with confidence!

As with any newbie you're taking a chance and time in the canopy is the only way. Point out methodologies, the 'tricks of the trade' so to speak. Not short cuts though.

Some kids grasp it quickly some don't. You have to spend time on them and learn how to best teach them or rather help them to learn. Often putting them with a more experienced climber who allows them to do bits and pieces through the week is a big help and getting up with them in big trees. Not always possible or practical though. Endeavour to give positive constructive criticism and praise and hope yo've invested your time and money well.

Treat them as if you want them to stay with you for some years and maybe they will.

Pushing for speed will only slow them down in the long run! Try different climbing systems maybe a different approch might give them the confidents they need to relaxe and crack on! faling that theres always a tazer

There is an element of natural ability involved here, some people will take to it naturally, some won't. I had believed that getting stuck in was the answer, I took on an apprentice climber a few years ago and just made him climb everything, he improved quickly and now is an excellent climber, I have another new start who has not been able to improve any where near as fast, even after 6 months occasionally climbing he is still unable to cope with any big trees in an acceptable time, this is not his fault I should point out. What has worked for one guy (pushing him outside his comfort zone) has not worked for another. I don't know way the answer is but experience is the key factor. Its hard as an employer to give experience to new starts if they are so slow that it holds you back and costs money and time.

 

Once we have got through our current run of commercial work I will give the newbie more climbing on smaller domestic trees where time pressures won't be so much of a factor, maybe this will help, as he will be able to build up slowly to doing more difficult stuff.

My previous newbie was young and confident and took to it no problem. I was spoiled i spose.

 

This new one is good but is slow.

 

Time is of the essence and i spose i must make more time for him when i can.
