Fungi Ident

I need some help Identifing this fungus please. I have looked in the Fungi Directory however I'm still unsure as to what it is. It's on the surface roots of a mature Beech if that helps (which also has Meripilus).

suggest initialy perenniporia fraxinea

Just checked out perenniporia fraxinea in the fungi directory and it's definately not a bracket fungus. More a covering like lichen.

This is a bit bigger photo of the same showing the remaings of Meripilus in the bottom right hand corner.

Here's another pic possible of the same fungus growing from a fold on the trunk at about 1m up from ground level.

So far I have looked in the following books

and Rogers Mushrooms online.

 

my other fungus books are at home with isn't helping

Looks a bit likea slime mould... Fuligo septica ?

Theres plenty of other stuff left by dogs but I dont think that one of them
