CS30 Course on its own

Are you able to do a cs30 course on its own rather than doing the the cs31 with it?

To my knowledge cs30 is about maintenance and crosscutting and cs 31 is about felling small trees (this may be wrong); I dont really want to fell trees I just want to saw logs up on other peoples land which you need a certificate for.

There was a guy who did the 30 course with me, he only wanted it so that he knew how to handle a saw. The instructor then took him through an assessment. I then went on to do my 31 but the other guy didnt go any further. So yeah there is no reason you would need to either complete or pay for the 31 if all your planning to do is own a saw and cross cut

the course does not cover all of that aspect,

snedding the branches off a smaller tree is covered in Cs31 & crosscutting to stack

& limb breakdown of larger tree canopys is covered in cs32

the main implication is the issue in regard to the stored energy held within the tree & its limbs this energy can be released when you cut & this can then cause the servered limb to whip out and strike you ,trap you , cause the stem to move, through or trap your saw,, etc etc

also if wind blown that is covered by a later course due to further complications they are potentially very dangerous

if its a pre sned log then thats different as cs30 covers crosscutting. tension & compression.

best bet is get the first done & see how you feel about the next one

however some providers do offer a discount if done together ,, this very much depends on you though take it at your own pace as a joint course is quite a lot of theory, both maintenance & practical saw use related, coupled with the felling apsect

you can search the lantra & nptc websites & read up from there, to get an idea of what you are letting yourself in for..

I did start doing a cs30/31 course but unfortunately the instructor was an arsehole, so I quit (I know you might be thinking at least persist and get your cert. but I couldn't stand him any longer) It is a shame because I was doing quite well. so I will be doing it again with another firm. Because im not really a fan of felling trees just cutting up logs and fallen trees , so I thought maybe because I not going to fell trees I could just do the cs30 and not cs31.

Many Thanks

Ted
