Oiling problem ProMac 10-46

Just inherited an immaculate ProMac 10-46 with an 18" bar.

 

Fresh petrol, sharpened chain, Oregon chain oil.

Started instantly, cut very well but then after a few 10" logs I discovered chain was getting hot. No chain oiling. Adjuster underneath already set to max.

 

Stripped side off and clutch expecting to find perhaps nylon gear had stripped teeth. Both gears fine. Everything in the pump was perfect, not choked with sawdust and the feed and output pipes were clear, Filter clear.

 

When I rotated driven gear gently by hand it pumped up the drops of engine oil that I had used to assemble pump for first start.

 

Put back together. Ran. Nothing . Not one drop of chain oil coming up the pipe from the pump. ???????????????????

 

Help please. Do I try EP90 gear oil instead or Oregon chain oil - but really the pump and saw are barely run-in.

It can be a little frustrating with these pumps. Sometimes they appear fine, and lets face it, there is nothing much to go wrong.

But sometimes they just wont work and a new one is needed, but check out oils first.

I am not sure of the CST rating ( thickness) of Oregon oil, I think its around 150. Some EP 90,s are around 200 cst so unlikely to improve matters.

Some chainoils like the Gopart are 100cst so more likely to flow.

 

You could just try a 5w40 or similar car oil to see if it pumps a thinner oil therby proving the pump.

I have to say the pump is an incredibly simple design and finding nothing wrong was actually a blow!

I'm more used to rebuilding classic and vintage cars so to be thwarted by this was a bit frustrating.

Will try thinner oil. The saw is actually so good that it is worth persevering.

 

Still not as good as my old Pioneer P20 but I try not to use that as it is pre-chainbrake.

That model evidently is or was not available in North America because I've never even heard about it and I collect McCullochs .Generally speaking most Macs used an impulse driven oiling system which is nearly trouble free with exception of the mini Macs.

 

The only gear driven systems I'm aware of at all were on the Titan series which was made in Italy late 80s-early 90's .

 

Never he less an old cure for a slow oiler is often pumping diesel fuel or kerosine through the system .Works most of the time .

If the pump works when you turn it by hand but not when it is on the saw then it sounds as if it is not being driven by the saw? Take the spark plug out and strip the clutch if you need to to get access - put a finger on the drive gear and turn the saw over by hand and make sure that it is being driven against resistance.

 

We had a case with a stihl where the oil pump was not working properly but drive gear etc was fine and eventually found a crack in the body of the pump - but even then it did pump a little oil
