Hi, I'm doing my 38 in the next few weeks and have recently been told that I should choke my strop with a running bowline while i'm spiking.. was wondering if an assessor would let my know the current in's and out's of preferred practice on this matter before I fail on something so silly... thx in advance for any help:001_huh:

When you say choke your strop do you mean your flipline or your safety line? Your flipline should not be choked on the stem imo because you need it to flip, sometimes people will double wrap it round the stem so it doesnt slip on smooth barked species (i dont because its difficult to move it up). Personally i just have my flipline from side ring, round the stem, to side ring. Then my climbing line i will have choked on the stem as the safety line and means of escape (also means of a rest from standing in spikes after a while).

firstly thx... This is how I saw it in my head but just to clarify... my flipline flips (as yours does) and when you say choked climbing line how do you achieve this? i.e. running bowline, carab etc.. I usually climb on a hitch and so use the spice normally but obviously have to change the system slightly to "choke" for my spiking.. makes perfect sense for the safety, just need the official stance on it.

Did you not get the Lantra work book when you started your course.

Pole rescue 2 or 3 man.

3 man lower the casualty with a belay system.

If you use a karabiner for the false anchor, your instructor should highlight that you are using your rope beyond its recommended bend ratio.

I use a running bowline choked on the stem for my safety line I dont use a carab at all because it can cross load it plus with all the movement that can happen it can possibly open the gate, and i use a grigri as my descender. This is also a good method to stop the "barn door" effect you can get sometimes by swinging round the stem unintentionally, the choked climbing line (if tight enough) stops you from swinging round, you may need to swap direction of the choked line depending which way the stem leans. I cant give you the official stance on it but thats how i do it and it works for me.
