I saw some in the shop the other day when picking up bits and it definitely looked more like a double braid or 16 strand splice but the email which came from marrow at the beginning o this thread described pretty much the heavy duty kernmantle splice you can find on neropes.

 

Is there any reason why treating this like a 16 strand splice but with a 24 strand cover wouldn't work?

If it's a kernmantle splice it's all about core strength hence the core is spliced. Normal 16 strand splice removes the core and has all the strength in the cover. 100% completely different types of splices.
