does the tree already show any hint of a natural ongoing retrenchment of it's own doing ? Often this can be of great help in determining where to aim the reduction to in terms of overall canopy reduction on a first phase. Obviously with a mind to not overdoing it & aiming to retain as much photosynthetic material as possible.

Evaluating the condition of the crown, the tree already has lost some of its far outreaching heavy branches without loosing that much foliage for photosynthesis in the remaining inner crown and without activating its dormant buds on the trunk to compensate for the losses in the canapy (yet).

 

And as I understand from other Dutch veteran tree projects and a project I was involved in myself in Breda in 2007, trees - and especially Aesculus (Anne Frank tree, Horse chestnuts with Meripilus Breda) - can become lazy in investing in their rootsystem to keep upright themselves when major branches are supported and can collaps even though they have been "scaffolded" (Amsterdam) or fitted with "props" (Breda).

Exactly what I have been telling my students for years, untill a student came to me last week during a break to tell me I was being too negative. In his opinion I had to rephrase that as 'efficient', not 'lazy'. Guess there's some truth in that
