Any thoughts as to the identity of this degraded fruiting body?

My guess is Ganoderma carnosa although I know this is rare; however I am fairly sure that this is not Laetiporous. The second attached image is of the pore surface.

This definitely is an annual Ganoderma species, but which species can only be determined by using a microscope.

It is rare but i think you have made a well educated guess, i do not know whether G. carnosum is annual or perennial without looking it up but yours looks to be annual in nature.

 

If it is G. carnosum and spore assessment would be needed congratulations on the find, i am very jealous!

Thank you both very much! The implications of failure of the tree would actually be very small (and very unlikely to occur) but I wanted to double-check my suspicions with greater minds than my own limited intellect!
