Biomass boiler info

Yesterday I was working at a house and I was talking to the tenant about his cracking woodshed, it was packed to the rafters with 400mm seasoned hardwood, he told me it was for the boiler, he showed me the boiler and it's a biomass boiler, you put kindling and paper in first and once it's going he said he puts in 13 logs, at the moment he said that will last 3 days, it heats the water and floors and radiators, he said in the winter it may have to be filled everyday!! Seems an expensive way to heat if you have to use hardwood don't you think?? I thought they ran on pellets or chips, could it not run on softwood?
