Can't beat the HH IMO, Merino, especially Icebreaker is great but too hot and won't last like your HH.

 

If you call the commercial side of HH you can get the classic long lifa for £17. Unfortunately they don't do the orange anymore which they did last season.

Just popped into local millets and bought a camo base layer for 10 quid, cant go wrong with that, seems comfortable too.

blacks sell a brand called falke which is nearly as good as my ice breaker but is a fraction of the price! ice breaker is great though but at £80ea they're a bit dear. falke was £32 ea i wear them summer or winter and they regulate my body temp perfect in either season. only downside is that they are v. fitting (shows off my gut something rotten!)

The best base layer that I've worn came from a rugby shop in Bath.

 

Made by Canterbury, its a thermal layer that will take the mosture away from your body.

 

Because its designed for rugby players it has a cool looking grip running down the arm to grip the ball better, so your base layer won't wear away quickly when climbing everyday.
