Started to really get into milling and making benches etc lately.

Just wondering how you exp guys manage to get to colour of the wood to come through and have such a fine finnish?

Was thinking about using belt sander to get rid of rough spot then hand sand a bit before applying danish oil ....anything i am missing? any tips?

Also any good books on how to put rustic furniture together?

Cheers.

Belt sanders are okay to a point, after planing, but you will need to finish with an orbital sander or by hand, as you say, with finer and finer grades of paper, as the finish you apply will bring out all those little sanding marks that you think you have sanded out lol.

I use different oils for different things. danish oil is a good all rounder, but can darken the wood a little bit. Check out these guys for superb quality oils for every application and lots of useful info.

It is the oil/ varnish etc etc that you apply that brings the colour out of your work.
