yes the top of the rootstock will be cut off in march.

the advantage of budding over notch grafting in this instance is 1 it's quicker and 2 you get a better tree.

I average about 200 per hour with someone tying behind me, depending on variety.

 

The other advantages I find are take rate - slightly over 90% for me; less susceptibility of the union to late frosts and it's just nicer standing around outside at this time of year!

Try Brogdale you might be able to buy the bud wood from them.

Yep, I've had wood from Brogdale before, bit dependent on the growth rate they get. I think I know where you are - other side of Maidstone from where I was.
