Very impressed people with the fungal knowledge, in my opinion the sign of a true arborist. One question is there a definative book out there for fungal ID which is aimed at arborist/tree workers and such. What books do you guys use. Or is it just good old Roger Philips??????

Get your basic fungi books and get searching on the net as that is the greatest resource..... There isnt a book that is thourgh on free related fungi which is a shame...

Whilst not fool proof, I've found the short fungal section in 'Diagnosis of ill Health in Trees' to be useful.

 

Basically it concentrates on the likely candidates i.e. the ones that are pathanogenic to trees - it subdivides them into toadstools, brackets etc.

 

I've then usually been able to make a more positive ID by looking up images of the two or three that generally fit the description in the book.

 

The main problem I've found with identifying something new is that some of them change so much in appearance through a season - and the books only have one or two images - that's where a web search can come in handy.

Cross referencing is essential imo also....

The Manual of Wood Decays in Trees is a significant book for all arborists imo.

Afield guide is also very useful when out and about...

Agreed, online research is invaluable....

Makes me wince abit when people are failed on certs for tricky ID.s when if in doubt, I would not hesitate to look it up, refer to others or send samples for id....

To be honest, I dont know whether there really is just one handy book....Phillips is good....you might want to add his id website to your favourites...works from simple scientific key to search...
