If anyone can watch look north tonight on I player etc 2 trees, 1 in Hexham and 1 in south shields has fallen today in the high winds, the hexham tree was a mature beech which fell on a car killing the 18 year old driver. The other tree was a semi mature birch fallen onto a house in south shields, the reporter basically said that the two trees werent preventable, but surely the investment of more tree officers would defiantly help, I no as a tree officer you cannot always see defects on trees and they can still fail, and I hope the tree officers have a good archive of previouse inspections.

This without a doubt is more evidence against negative strategy in tree inspecting.

Cheers ciaran glyde.

Yeah it did look like a minor country road, my thoughts to the family.

It's just not viable to do even drive by inspections on these country roads otherwise there would litterly be 5 times the amount of tree officers for each council, there's no solution unfortunately.

Glad to hear that no one was hurt, but considering in such a urban area you would think the tree would be monitored in such way the tree wouldn't get so bad to fail, I no that trees can just fail when healthy but I'm sure there would be a defect on them otherwise all trees would fall over with strong winds!
