I doen think I have ever done a single straight cut on a crane job.If it works for you then great.

 

Before I did any crane work I practiced by setting up lifting systems with mechanical advantage in the tree. Seeing how loads move up and in three dimensions is an education.

 

It's really rare that I would ever make a single straight through cut in a rigging configuration.
