Advice to a newbie.

Hi all,

I hope somebody can help me with a few questions, as Im trying to get a rough idea of the best way of starting out with climber, and chainsaw quals.

 

1. Am I better going freelance, being employed, or setting up on my own to start with?

2. What gear am I best getting my hands on to start with ie, saws, climbing eqpt, ppe, ground maint tools, etc.

3. A vehicle, will I be best with a van or 4x4 or both?

4. Best insurance?

5. Any reference material I will need?

Well basoically Im totally new to the arborist/tree surgery world. I have no experience and am looking for a complete career change after I leave the army. So trying to get as much info as possible as to where and how is the best way of starting out. So please go easy on me.

with no experience, getting a job within a company would be your best bet

Thank you for your service. Not knowing your specific job while serving I would suggest some basic courses in Arboriculture. Depending on weather you were enlisted or non-com or commissioned in the service can also determin to a point which direction you may wish to go. Not knowing your financial situation I believe School/Work in the Arboriculture field part time or full depending on many factors may be your best course of action.

I would look at doing some sort of diploma/certificate at a local college first. This will provide you with skills, experience (to a degree), the paperwork (NPTC Tickets) and most importantly contacts within industry. Depending where abouts in the northwest you are Reaseheath offers some great courses and is a cracking place to study.
