Tops swinging and hitting you can be avoided by using what i call a dogged step, so you cut almost all the way through from one side then cut down at 45 degree like you would when doing a dog tooth felling cut and the remaining wood should stop they chunk for swinging back at your head.

That top wouldnt have been stopped by a dogged step cut, as soon as the butt lifted free of the stump it was going to flip.

 

Proper slinging would have prevented it flipping.

Yeah it was a bit large but everything helps, wasn't saying it was foolproof but nothing can make up for incorrect rigging and slinging as you have said Peter
