What camera?

D-SLR's are not very easy to transport, they don't go in your pocket, as people say above Canon G - series or Lumix.

 

Not so worried about the carrying thing. I already have a little basic samsung point and squirt which I use for photos for reports and small stuff but I really want to start getting some nice photos. Not just of trees but landscape stuff etc. There's so much beauty around here and a crap camera really doesn't do it justice. I love having art and photos on the walls rather than the minimalist look so I'm hoping I can get a few decent ones I can frame. I've suddenly started to realise I've got naff all photographinc record of my family, travels etc and if I don't pull finger stuff will slip by without me capturing it. I just don't want to do it half cocked that's all.

Panasonic lumix, they own leica now i think so lots of technology crossover! The lx5 being the obvious choice! Just remember high megapixel values dont count for anything if the camera has a poor sensor!

I think I've narrowed it down to either the Canon EOS 1000D or the Nikon 3000 (I think) as they seem to be the best DSLR's for beginners. Going to go have a proper nosey this weekend and see what I think but if anyone has any further advise it's all welcome.

I've owned two Canon slr cameras over the years and two Nikon slr's. Numerous compacts adn the only advice I can offer is that for me it's slr or dslr everytime over a compact.

As for the Nikon/ Canon arguement, ita the same as the Sthil/Husky debate. It'll go on for ever.

Personally I prefer the layout and the build quality of my Nikon D200, which incedently I had up a 100ft Douglas fir yesterday.....built to last!!

I can highly recommend the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ10. It is "point and shoot" but has good Leica optics, 12x optical zoom, excellent low-light performance and build-in GPS that automatically geo-tags you photos, so you can see where they are taken (in Picasa and other photo albums).
