Hope this is the right place.....

Had a call from a friendly farmer tonight, he is looking to clear fell approx two acres of mature poplar, around 200 hundred trees i believe, dont know why, and not having seen it i know nothing about it.

He wants to know if permission needs to be sought to fell this amount, is there a website that shows tpo's etc, and what do you guys reckon ?

Yep you'll need a licence form the FC. See their website and leaflet getting permission/

Pretty much as i guessed then, i told him that i thought it would be needed, having only dealt with dangerous trees (exempt) i was not certain what exemptions applied for him if any.

I am just browsing the fc site now, doesnt give huge amounts of info though, any ideas of costs/timescale involved in obtaining said licence.

Cheers.

If he isnt looking to replant it, its worth contacting the local FC regional office before submitting an application to explain the situation

It will require a felling license and it will have to go on the public register for 1month as its a clearfell, as for TPO's your local council may have an interactive mapping service as ours do where you can see the location of TPOs and conservation areas,

rough time scales:

felling license, 4weeks minimum (free)

conservation area 6weeks (free)

TPO 2months (will incure a fee)

if the site is being replanted then FC will help with restocking if you submit the felling license as part of and EWGS application for the site, although you would have to put an inventory of all the landowners woodlands on it

Thankyou for that,

I will check the local council to see if the have the mapping service.

Knowing the farmer and from the brief chat we had......

He will more than likely re-plant, he was asking me about grants and schemes to look at, and he usually replaces trees he loses, so would be suprised if he does not re-plant

When i say clear fell, as i understand it, it will only be the poplar he wants to clear out, it sounds like there are some other hardwoods involved but they are not to be cleared, the poplar are at the end of thier life and plenty have already dropped naturally, as i say, i am in the dark about it all at present, i have agreed to call in on him one day this week to view the site.
