Trunks as shop fittings, question

I have a client that wants to use some 3.5m logs as part of the shop fitting they are doing as a feature. However they dont want them to lose their bark as they dry out. I am generally involved later down the line but said that as far as I am aware when the timber dries the bark is coming off.

Is this the case and if not are there some timbers that hold their bark better than others? I have thought about using that hardener that they use to repair rotten windows etc but I am not convinced.

Any thoughts?

As you say, soem timbers lose their bark faster than others. Most softwoods lose their bark very readily. I have found that the bark of Ash is reluctant to give up its hold- I have a shelf above me with the bark still on it, that has been in 2 consecutive sitting rooms. I dont suppose that you are any the wiser though now!

I once heard that a lot of what determines whether the bark stays on is the time of year that it's cut. Summer (ie growth period) felling means the bark is more inclined to hang on, winter felling, it's more likely to fall off. I might be completely mistaken though!

I have explained that the chances are that in time they will start to lose the bark and the client has now accepted that they are going to have to take a bit of a chance.

I am not going to get involved in supplying then logs but if anyone on here would like to then if you post/message me your details then I will forward them to the client.

The quantity is two, they should be fairly straight, as little damage to the bark as possible, length 3.5m-4m and diameter around 400mm to 450mm (roughly) I guess that it would help if they were fairly clean already as the client is probably going to want you to supply them pretty clean. delivery to enfield area for mid febuary.

Thankyou,
