What is the best tree measuring gadget out there???

You can download a clinometer app free for your ipod, just need a tape measure to finish the job. I also remember being shown how to establish height by using a stick and pacing, can be pretty accurate too if you calibrate your stride?

... And if he's not on a budget?

I get by - just - with a hammer, DBH tape, 5m tape, a combi spanner used as a pokey thing, a bit of chalk and a digi camera (for using ratio method of tree height measuremement if it's critcal) and lots and lots of practise.

Plus various other low cost bits and pieces that stay in the murky botom of my survey bag.

You can have all the best gear on the market, but it's still only as good as the person using it.

Sorry I was just being flippant Janey. Ive got a pokey thing and a grubby survey bag too! The Haglof clinometer is good though!

I guessed you were .

The cost for even basic survey kit can be quite frightening, especially when you have to start from scratch and you don't have a client base to speak of.

The amount of freelance surveying that I undertake doesn't warrant a large financial outlay, but that doesn't stop me WANTING all the shiny hi tech gizmos that you mention :001_tt1: At some point the line has to be drawn between want and need.

And experience and knowledge is the key factor to whatever kit you choose to use.

I agree, i dont know how anyone could get a return on investment, especially if the equipment was financed. All surveys/tree inspections I have done/been involved with rely on knowledge and experience. Keeping an open mind and not jumping to conclusions too readily.
