Happy new year lads and lasses.

I have been asked to provide a price for planting trees on a site. Spec:

 

2.2 PLANTS AND PLANTING

2.2.1 Trees will be cell-grown plants in 175cc plugs and 20-60cm high.

 

2.2.2 Plants supplied to the site, or contractor base, which ever is most appropriate.

 

2.2.3 The trees will be planted in the marked wavy rows.

 

2.2.4 Trees will be planted at a variable spacing in the row to achieve a density of 2,500 trees per hectare. Spacing will vary from 1-3m apart with tighter spacing in the centre and wider on the edge next to open ground.

 

2.2.5 Three lower density areas of 1,100 stems/ha are identified in the planting area, see planting map

 

2.2.6 Turf to be screefed from planting station with trees then notch planted.

 

2.2.7 Planting to ensure the root collar is at groundlevel and the plant is firmly healed in.

 

2.2.8 Plants to be vertical.

 

2.2.9 All planting is to be guarded by the end of each day.

 

2.4 TREE PROTECTION

2.4.1 Guards and canes will be supplied to the site, or contractor base, which ever is most appropriate.

 

2.4.2 The guards will consist of 0.6m spirals (38mm) supported by bamboo cane 0.9m (12-14lb/100).

 

2.4.3 The cane will be pushed 1/3 of the way into the ground next to the planted tree.

 

2.4.4 The spiral is then placed over, or wrapped around, the tree and the cane.

 

2.4.5 The spiral will be pushed firmly down to ensure good contact with the ground.

 

2.4.6 Both the cane and spiral to be vertical.

 

2.4.7 Care to be taken to ensure plants are not damaged as spiral are fitted over them.

 

 

 

Plus a price for weeding and mowing;

3.1 WEEDING (SPOT)

3.1.1 Roundup biactive to be applied around the base of each planting station to give a weed control spot of 1m diameter.

 

3.1.2 Inform site manager at least 24 hours in advance of spraying operations to check site access is available, and not being used by students, and to warn them spraying is being undertaken.

 

3.1.3 Ensure herbicide spray does not come into contact with the planted tree / shrub.

 

3.1.4 Roundup biactive to be applied at 4litres/ha.

 

3.1.5 Marker dye to be used to ensure planting stations are not missed and to help gauge spot diameter.

 

3.1.6 Spraying operations to be undertaken when directed by GRL. Normally a first weeding during the spring (March-May) and second later in the year (June–July or Sept-Oct).

 

3.1.7 Filling of knapsacks on site only at agreed locations.

 

3.1.8 Herbicide spraying not to be undertaken during wet or windy weather, or when wet weather expected within 2-4 hours.

 

3.1.9 Ineffective herbicide application due to wet weather will have to be repeated at the contractors own expense.

 

The price they were working on was about 42pence per tree -does that sound about right. Been years since I did anything on this scale so any input would be of great help! 5800 trees mixed broadleved in total.

 

Plus another site with 5200 to the same planting spec but with the below protection:

2.4.2 The guards will consist of 0.75m treeshelters (78-105mm) supported by chestnut stakes 0.9m.

 

2.4.3 The stake to be driven into the ground to a sufficient depth so the top of the stake is at least 5cm below the top of the tube and above the top tie.

 

2.4.4 The base of the guard to be slightly pushed into the ground (5mm).

 

2.4.5 The plant to be in the centre of the guard.

 

2.4.6 Plant stem / branches not to be trapped within the guard ties.

 

2.4.7 Guards and stakes to be vertical.

 

2.4.8 Stakes to be on the SW side of the guard and ties to be tight.

They were talking around the 65p per tree mark for the tree shelter (second) lot.
