I am looking to buy a gps grid ref for daily risk ass. also grid ref for hazardous trees so as i report them it is closer than reading off a map. also i have been asked to survey and record ancient,veteran trees and also do a count of all trees young and old and count the stock in our 400 acre park. with a small gps i can plot on to my parkland maps. it will be nice to know the ratio between young,mature and veterans. Can anyone recomend a good cheap gps with 8 or 10 didget grid ref.

not sure what is good at the moment, but be careful as many struggle under tree canopies!!!! probably ok in parkland, but not great in forestry in my experience.

Remember cheap/small gps are only accurate to 20ish metres..... If you try to plot 2x trees that means they could be 40 metres out....... You need to be spending £600 + on gps otherwise you might as well buy good OS mastermaps and use landmarks and plot by hand

Try A Trimble Juno st PDA with in built gps, was made with forestry in mind and gets good reception under canopies, also with the correctional software can give you sub metre accuracy..

could also try a gps reciever plugged into a laptop! run memory map software or similar!

I would suggest the Juno Pda with Pocket GIS

Whatever GPS you choose make sure it has Sirf 3 Technology. This will give you a reception under any canopy and even in a building down to + - 3M
