any help please what is this???

its on euonymus japonicus some of the heavy stemms inside the hedge 2-3cm in diamiter are covered in the black bug (if it is a bug) thought maybe the linear white flecks are eggs they are also on the heavy wood.not all the hedge is affected, there are dead patches around the garden but most is ok it is set in a very exposed costal situation.

Hello it looks to me like euonymus scale its a bit of a bugger to get rid of i see it alot in my area if you type that in to a seach engine you should find which spray are most affective

I was thinking scale too. But is it a problem? Euonymus is such resilient stuff I would be surprised if it is. Also the scale doesn't worry about salt so is also resilient, hiding inside its armour coat.

Isn't leaving it a viable option?

I'd be surprise if the plant can't live with the scale but perhaps this'll help.
