The attached photos are of 12 year old beech trees which are beset with the obvious problem, it has already killed 3 out of 10 and is affecting all but a copper beech to some degree.

Can anybody identify it for me? Can it be controlled? Is there any preventative measures I can take?

I live at 1000ft near Lake Vyrnwy mid-Wales in a semi remote area and I have not seen any other local trees of any age infected.

Many thanks

Rob

It’s not a disease, it is mechanical damage.

Any number of causes but the likely candidates are rabbits at ground level and squirrels higher up.

Not a lot you can do about it now.
