he asked what the tree was, so I was suggesting it was some form of dogwood possibly and how to check it was a dog wood!

 

when you break the leaf gently all dogwoods have little strings inside the leaf that remain attached when you pull apart the two halves.

 

Haha that's cool; latex threads I seem to remember; didn't know dogwoods did it. Wasn't Gutta Percha the one for that?

 

I almost thought it was an Osage Orange at one point!

Reason I thought O-O was because of the bark (good ol John Wilkinsons drawings in Alan Mitchells book) though the leaf isn't similar in shape. Me having the blue-rinse moment I think!
