Forgive me if this sounds dumb (as im only doing my cs38 in 2 weeks)

Im looking at buying my first real climbing rope and would like to know whats best go for, a spliced eye rope or stick to tying a bowline to clip to the harness?

Also is Marlow Gecko rope any good?

Thanks for any help.

Double figure of eight is a bit better knot than the bowline IMO- it's what I use on my marlow Gecko (no eyes) never had a problem with it or the rope, in fact I'm thinking of getting another when my current one gets retiered get the yellow and red tho much easyer to see when you need to.

I know some one with the red and black and it can be a bit to dark to be easy to see at times.

Marlo Gecko is the cheapest rope you can get, not that good tbh - ok for a second rope or a laylandii rope.

I would say save up a bit more to get Yale XTC, very good rope and not too expensive compared to others.

Spliced eyes are much better as they don't get caught in tight crotches like the bowline knot - the only way round that is to untie/re-tie the knot every time which is a pain in the ass.

Also, knot's like the bowline interfere with climbing systems which involve a pulley/friction knot i.e. VT hitchclimber.

Spliced eyes are great and once you've spiked or nicked the rope, which inevitably happens you can have a spliced eye short strop and practice tying your chosen knot in your long(but not as long as it used to be) rope. Yale is a good working rope. The bowline can work loose in it so I always put the extra little knot around the loop. Figure of eight is secure but sometimes a right sod to undo especially when wet.
