Did think from a reuseable point of view using 2 Tree ties with sawn off broom handle but then the tree ties were worth more than the sticks.

Any suggestions for an alternative to plastic kindling nets as it just seems environmentally wrong putting this extra plastic into the community.

 

Are they not made from recycled plastic John?

i know that the plastic nets dont break down very well, a few years ago there was a lot of cockle picking going on around our local estuarys, lots of net bags were discarded by the pickers,our wildfowling club picked thousands up but there are some still being washed up and after a few years in the sea they are perfectly usable.

Its not the issue of using recycled plastic its more as Lyn has highlighted should we really be using any sort of plastic when we cannot guarantee how it is going to be disposed. Unlike organic material which will compost in a matter of weeks most plastics tend to take years

Cheers for the reply john, but i feel the reply you quoted from Lyn was as a result of careless cockle pickers, not log burners.

 

Surely, in the(mainly) domestic market, customers are already thinking green by burning none fossil/carbon neutral fuels and will have the foresight to either reuse the nets, or put them in the plastic recycle bin?

 

If these nets are already made from recycled plastic, that must be a good thing but if they were reused or recycled again, i wonder how this would compare to the manufacturing and environmental impact of a single use cardboard/natural type of packaging?

 

There are still thousands of tons of plastic per week going to landfill but yet millions are spent finding out ways of recycling highly degradable materials that would be much safer in landfill IMO.

 

Sorry if this sounds a bit negative on the line of your idea of less man made pacaging, but you are already selling to an eco consious audience. Perhaps the marketing should go along the lines of;

 

"We have used recycled materials to package your firewood, so please help us and the environment by returning your packaging for re-use or responsible disposal"

 

Just a thought from a different angle.

I agree the customers are likely to be eco conscious by buying wood in the first place so from a marketing strategy if you can offer an eco friendly alternative to a plastic net even if it is recycled plastic,then the Eco customer will go for the Eco solution providing the price levels are equal.
