Are there any scenarios where i would NEED any more than class 1 protection PPE?

I realise that one should always buy the best you can afford but it is an expensive game, but in the same breath I am always conscious of the old motto "buy cheap, buy twice".

Any help / advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance W.G

It really depends on the chain speed of the machine you are using. I.e, if your max chain speed is 19m/s the class 1 is adequate. If your chain speed is 28m/s the you would need class 3 (or whatever is the highest available).

The main reason the chain speed increases from manufacturers spec would be:

Shorter bar length

Changing the main drive sprocket

Please excuse my ignorance, but does this mean that if you buy a saw from one of the big two the chain speed would only require more than class 1 protection if you deviate from the manufacturers guidelines on bars lengths or were to change the main drive sprocket?

Or do they both manufacture saws that require class 2 or 3 protection as stock?

Obviously I will carry out detailed research before the purchase of a saw, but i want to complete some of my NPTC training / certificates before i buy a saw. However I wish to purchase my own PPE for the courses but don't want to find that I have bought PPE which restricts my saw purchase.

Sorry for the longwinded post.

As the famous expression goes.......refer to the manufacturers handbook for your specific machine data.

Thanks for this Borders, I guess my best bet will be to buy class 3 PPE, if chain speed strays from class to class, from saw to saw. (even at manufacturers spec)

Class2 type C trousers should be sufficient. What size saw are you thinking of buying?

Im not 100% sure at the moment but probable something along the lines of a Stihl MS 341 / 361.

You shouldnt need anything more than the above (class2/type c)

John

Sorry for the bombardment of questions but hopefully the answers will help others too.
