Makita 5200i starts then stops

My Makita 5200i doesn't get much use but has recently developed a starting problem.

It fires up ok but stops dead after a few seconds. I've cleaned the carb, filters and tank vent and replaced the diaphragms and the fuel pipe.

Problem still exists.

Any ideas?

Hi,

I hadn't touched either until I took the carb apart and on reassembly I followed the Tillotson recommendations of "OPEN HIGH SPEED MIXTURE SCREW AND IDLE MIXTURE SCREW ONE (1) TURN" before fine tuning after the engine had warmed up. (haven't got to that stage yet!!)

Also checked that exhaust wasn't blocked.

Baffling!!

Hi,

Bore look fine - like new.

It's always been a good starter, second pull normally, and even now after its been left for a while it fires up as quickly. The difference now is that during a "trying to find the problem" session the the time taken to fire up gets progressively longer as if fuel can't even get through quick enough for successive starting attempts.
