Woodland management

Hi

 

I have been asked to go into a woodland measure 10 of each species of tree there. Now i have to find out the age of each species of trees. I have done this in college but always coudent find out what the average age was for just that species we got showed how to do it. but now when i need to know how to do it i carnt remember it and the tutor dosen't wont to tell me..

 

All i need is the way of working it out

 

think i can remember it was something like this

 

Oak tree

167

178 (division by 2.5)

------

239.2 That have given me the average for the trees i have measured but i need to find out the average age for all of that species in the Woodlands

When you say you've been asked to measure 10 trees do you mean timber volume, height or something else. The age of each species should be on a stock map of the woodland, if there is one.

I need to get the average age for trees Person askes How old are the oak trees in this woodland

 

Owner says The oak trees are between 150-200years old Yanno what i mean theres a sum on how to do it

I recognise the 2.5cm as the Alan Mitchell method for calculating the age of trees. I did a search on this found the following page;

There are also cultural methods to estimate the age of trees i.e. old maps, aerial photographs, place names etc.
