Could this be extended throughout the North West perhaps to become an over arching co-operative do you think? I have neither the means or the time to contribute [+ I live just outside the 25 mile catchment] just now but it is a fine principle. I feel a lot of time, money and tears is lost in Arb due to this "suspicion" of which you speak.

The whole industry would benefit from behaving collectively like a set of skilled craftspeople/consultants on every side of arb life.

The funding is a 4 million pot with a minimum 1 project from each county so Cheshire,Lancs,Cumbria,Merseyside, and Greater Manchester so the Arb communities would need to be organized by County so I suppose my 25 mile should really cover the whole of Lancs. Min grant is 200k and max 500k with grant award upto 70% hence my interest.

Sounds a good idea to me. If you can make the figures add up, theres a lot of us out there that would be more than happy just to get rid of waste for nothing. Thats if I understand correctly?

So where are all these people. Is Arbtalk not populated with people in the North West? those who have already posted I thank for your positive comments but for something like this to work we do need physical support in the supply of woodchip the end result being a product equivalent to coal which can extend your product range and make you a good profit.

Just to update

We filled in the Expression of Interest for this grant funding for a Torrefication plant based in Lancashire and out of approx 150 projects 23 have gone through to the full application stage, fortunately we are one of them.

The grant application is for 450k and will turn Arb waste into a coal substitute. I am now looking for local Arb partners who can commit to the project and have Arb arisings available which can be quantified on an annual basis. At the present moment I am in two minds whether to continue with the full application due to the time and effort required to fill in the form and the recognition that I am unable to carry out the project without the positive support of a community of Tree Surgeons. Given that grants will be scarce under this new government I think it is a great way to get some much needed investment into the Arb industry. What do you all think or am I just wasting my time.

I think it's a great idea. Somewhere to drop off arisings for nowt. I'd almost drive up from Oxford.

As mooted the challenge is to break through the suspicion factor, but that aside £450k is a fair chunk of money and the hoops one would have to jump through to get that kind of money from a bank would be numerous. Therefore expect to have to do a lot of work to be in the race for it and accept the fact you may not win it.
