How do all.

I'm heading up north on the 11th of this month, going to head to Ullapool via the west side of the country.

Love the place, 1st time was on the ZZR with a mate, can't rememember much of that trip as most of it was spent in the pubs sampling some of the rather tasty drams on offer.Very scenic and nice what i do recall.

Last time was with the familly, we spent best part of our time in Ullapool camping opposite loch Broom getting a tan, eating good seafood and watchin porpoise in the loch. Happy days, especially as the rest of the country seemed to be getting gales and downpours that August.

But this time is our budget honeymoon, gettin wed on Friday then heading off with the new Mrs Mallinder for a week of relaxation away from the lads.

What i want to know is any recomendations from you who live there/know of places to go, eat, drink, fish, camp, stay?

Plan (roughly) is drive up as far as we can and sleep in the car, (big enough for an airbed in the back so no worries there) then, well? Head north and hope for good weather and good times.

Maybe camp out in a forest somewhere, head as far north as we can and see about a bit of whale/wildlife watching?Don't know whens best for that?

Thoughts, ideas anyone???

Thanks Brett aka Yorkshire pudding. :001_smile:

stick to the west coast brett for scenery then maybe a nosey around the aviemore area, cracking campsite in glenmore. tbh for during the day food, we just stock up in tescos in the morning and picnic, saves waiting about and paying a fortune in a tourist trap. it may be worthwhile joining the caravan club, its cheap and you get great campsite discounts from what i have heard.

drive as far as glasgow on the m8 and follow signs to loch lomond, then you can cut straight over to the coast via inverary and go to oban up the coast or straight up through glen coe and head for fort william, take a spin on the harry potter train to mallaig and back then head up through to loch ness, see nessy then carry on up to ullapool that way, or go to skye, all very weather dependant mate, oh and midges. lol

I havent been but Applecross is supposed to be a nice place to visit (but so is every place up that way) and the sea food is amazing all the way up the west coast.

Basically the further you go, the more dramatic the scenery. What about heading over to Skye?

Cheers Stephen, You've mentioned quite a few spots we were going to hed back to already,Oban Loch Ness, Fort William (Good cheap outdoor shop there ,on the highstreet, not the one nxt to the green)And a few i'd not thought of,aviemore, glenmore campsite.

Think we'll be doing our eating out in the evening and sticking with the supermarket, bakers in the day mostly.

Is always good to have a bit of local knowledge though isn't it ;)

Skye will be an option this time. Was a bit much with the ferry costs when we had our boys with us last time, but as i said we'll have all the money to ourselves this time thankfully.Ended up in Portree lst time i was there getting eaten alive by midges. This was about half an hour after me and my mate silently mocked all the other folks there wearing big mozzie nets for looking daft.Think i looked dafter wafting my arms and slappin my baldy head all evening.

i love the cairngorms, better weather and not as many midges, outside aviemore there is a safari park with tigers and now a polar bear and lots of other stuff, well worth a visit.

eating in aviemore is good, the la taverna for italian, roos place for australian grub, top notch. but for the best breakfast view como, the mountain cafe above the climbing shop, expensive but awesome. you can go up the fanicular railway to the other mountain cafe or go and see the reigndeer. oh and loads of brewries

the brewries are on the rd to Elgin, the Malt trail i think its called. i have been in one in Islay, really interesting, but i dont like whiskey lol. cracking tool shop in Inverness, in the industrial estate, off the roundabout before you go over the big bridge towards ullapool. and on the same turn off, their is a cracking TISO and a good diner beside the NESSY petrol station(there is a huge plastic nessy in the forecourt)opens at 8am, great breakfast and bakery.

If you go to aviemore, head toward glenmore and there is a cracking loch (morlich) you can hire canoes and windsurfs. If you head down the A9 on the way home, the House of Bruar does a roast for £12 that even a big lad like you might struggle to have a pudding with, then pop into the oldest tree in britain outside dunkeld and even pop into the old Abbey and see the first Larch in Scotland, HUGE!!!!!!

Depending what way you go, depends on whats best to do, i will look out some pics and give you a taster mate
