I'm trying to remember the scientific research that backs up the 12 times stem diameter root protection area in BS5837:2005.

For some reason, I can't seem to find it.

Just wondered if anyone knew what science it was based on?:001_smile:

In BS 5837 it says its from research by Matheny and Clark from their book trees and development.

I would be interested to know the scientific basis too. i tried to contact one of the authors for my dissertation but got no response.

I was told at a workshop for the new BS 5837 (2005) that Metheney & Clark had made an improvement on Table 1 of the old BS 5837 (1991). That the 12x DBH was an educated estimate on where the majority of tree species roots should be located.

.......the 12x DBH was an educated estimate on where the majority of tree species roots should be located.

I think you will find that this the case. The modified "multi-stem" equation is no less scientific!

Changes have been introduced that permit an area to be skewed to reflect more accurately the distribution of a root plate when considering barriers such as walls , roads and so on.
