BOA lace system. Gimmick or actually useful?

I don’t like them.   They have been used on snowboard boots for over 25 years.  
 

They used to break in those.  Great backup and guarantee from Boa but useless if you are at the top of a mountain and you need to get down.

 

I can’t see how they would last in a tree climbing environment.
