Is there a case to be made for them starting out slowly, not undertaking anything too big and learning as they go? I don't really see any harm in that, especially if they aren't in a position to go and get experience with another tree firm. You can still do things properly and safely without tickets (although I do agree tickets if possible are the way to go).

I would say no. As Fred Dibnah used to say you can only fall off a chimney once, you probably don't get a second chance to get your work positioning right so that you avoid a kickback injury in a tree.
