I would say clean the cylinder up and fit a new piston, I guess there will be some on eBay, the 44 was the semi pro version of the 444, very nice little saw in its day, the early saw was the Practica 44, with a white cover, the later one had an orange top cover, they suffered a bit with the fuel hose splitting as it had a bellows in the centre to allow it to stretch as the fuel tank moved independently to the motor, very difficult to get an ignition unit for it today, the flywheel has two key ways in it depending on which ignition unit it had.

Nice saw. Good on you rebuilding your old man's saw, I've been there.

Parts availability doesn't seem great but chainsawpartsonline.co.uk has Meteor pistons for the Husqvarna 45 which is the same bore. That'd come with a piston, ring, wrist pin, circlips. A brand new cylinder won't be cheap if you can find one.

I was going to say salvage the original cylinder if you possibly can, but adw was faster!

44 seems to share some parts with a few saws and strimmers from that era, i.e the 244RX. Might be worth keeping an eye out for old parts machines if it comes to that.

Upload a photo of the cylinder and piston though, it might not be as bad as it seems.

edit: there's a 44 Practica on eBay currently, with haggling enabled.

244rx cylinder is from the 444 with closed transfer ports, the 44 had open transfer ports, I guess there is no reason why the cylinder and piston would fit as an assembly, I may have a 244rx engine unit somewhere under a bench.
